Matthew's first job in journalism was as Contributing Editor for The Official England National Team Magazine during Euro ‘96. He then covered Champions' League games for PlayStation. But his favourite position was as Deputy Editor of The Official Chelsea FC Magazine which saw him interview the likes of Joey Jones, Ruud Gullit, and Terry Venables.

Before travelling over to Australasia and Asia for Chelsea's 2026-27 pre-season tour, the furthest Matthew had been as a Blues fan was to watch them play in Baku. Living in the Canary Islands for over 20 years, he also began to follow UD Las Palmas. Away days there included a trip to the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. He did so by travelling from and to Algeciras by helicopter with the 11-minute journey heavily subsidized by a 75% Canary Islands resident discount.
