Rodrigo Calvo
With a career spanning 45 years since 1981, Rodrigo is a veteran of sports journalism. His early experience includes roles at Noticias Monumental (1981–1983), the programs Antena Deportiva and El Expreso del Deporte (1993–1995), Deportes Repretel (1995), and the press office of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).
He spent three decades with Grupo Nación, starting at the sports magazine Triunfo before moving to the newspapers Al Día and La Nación. From 2010 to 2014, he served as the assistant editor of Puro Deporte (La Nación), where he oversaw special sports publications. His work has reached international audiences through collaborations with FIFA-specialized media and outlets across Central America, the Caribbean, Mexico, North America, and Europe.
Rodrigo’s excellence has been widely recognized; he was named Reporter of the Year at La Nación in 1997 and received the prestigious Pío Víquez National Journalism Award in 2007. Additionally, he twice earned the Jorge Vargas Gené-Óscar Cordero Rojas Award (1993 and 2013) from the Costa Rican College of Journalists.
He specializes in national and international sports history and statistics, with a particular focus on Costa Rican national teams, the domestic league, women’s football, and Costa Rican players abroad. Since 1995, he has authored the column “Buzón de Rodrigo” (Rodrigo’s Mailbox), a popular reader’s space currently featured on buzonderodrigo.com and the radio program Fútbol Mundial (Radio Columbia).
His extensive field experience includes covering numerous FIFA World Cups—ranging from the 1986 and 2002 senior tournaments to various U-20 and U-17 championships—as well as the Copa América and the Gold Cup. He has also covered major European events, such as the 2000 FA Cup Final and the 2000 UEFA Champions League Final. Since 1989, he has served as a correspondent for the French weekly France Football and was a member of the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS) in Germany. Since 2007, he has also served on the global jury for the Ballon d’Or, helping select the world’s bestplayer each year.
An accomplished author, Rodrigo has published numerous works documenting sporting history, including titles on Costa Rica’s World Cup journeys, the history of La Nación’s sports coverage, and centennial chronicles for both Club Sport Herediano and the Costa Rican Football Federation (Federación Costarricense de Fútbol).
