Russell is a lifelong fan of Greenock Morton and also follows the Scotland National Team at home and on their travels. He took to writing about his club during the COVID lockdown as his friend had taken over the Morton Forum and linked it up with the Just One Cornetto Podcast, which provided post-match coverage of Morton’s matches.

As part of their coverage, Russell wrote weekly match previews for the Morton Forum, and eventually branched out to writing feature articles often coinciding with anniversaries, as well as season reviews and obituaries relating to his club.

Since the Just One Cornetto Podcast was discontinued and the Morton Forum website scaled back, Russell was invited to write the weekly A View From The Shed column for the Greenock Telegraph, which he has been writing since the start of the 2024-25 season. He plays an active role as a director of Morton Club Together, the community ownership group who own Greenock Morton FC, and admits to having a soft spot for Sheffield United.

His work can be found at The Morton Forum.
